Eco-Travel Destination — Discover Argentina’s Solar Towns, National Parks

The folks at Ethical Traveler recently ranked the “Best Ethical Travel Destinations,” and Argentina was at the top of the list … well, OK, it was there because it starts with “A,” not because it ranked highest, but nonetheless, it’s a short list and Argentina is on it. “Argentina has a vast array of natural wonders: from glaciers in the Andes to pre-Columbian villages in the North,” say Jeff Greenwald and Kiran Auerbach. The country has low overall CO2 …

Visit Your Fellow Earthlings At California’s Meerkat Farm
This meerkat farm has been on my list of places to go for a while now…. I’m hoping to do a road trip around the Mojave Desert region one wintertime soon, and I expect that this will be one of my stops. Anyone who’s seen a meerkat can’t help but be fascinated with them. The Meerkat Manor show on Animal Planet apparently is a hit (I haven’t seen it myself, being cable-limited) and National Geographic and Disney are fond of them too.
The Animal Planet show seems to indulge in …

Your home-exchange holiday

When friends of mine renovated their old farmhouse a few years ago, one thing they considered in the design is that they might want to try home-swapping one day… that is, they could travel somewhere and stay in somebody’s home, while those people stayed here. They haven’t tried it yet, but it sure sounds like a good idea. In fact, according to the folks at Budget Travel, “it’s the single most logical, reasonable, …

Transitions Abroad’s Responsible Travel Tips
I remember discovering Transitions Abroad magazine back in my college days, and it’s still hard to spend any time on a college campus without coming across this travel mag. It’s always been aimed at the independent traveler, and I’ve consulted it often when planning my own trips. It’s sort of a grass-roots version of National Geographic, introducing you to places you never heard of, stoking your travel dreams, and a great practical resource. Today, TA released their annual Responsible Travel issue, and while I don’t have the whole issue yet, parts …

White Goes Green — Eco-Friendly Ski Resorts

You need two things for (downhill) skiing — a mountainside and snow — and in many places across the populated parts of the world, snow seems to be getting scarcer. Resort operators cope by making more snow themselves, but in many places, they’re also taking action to reduce their contribution to the greenhouse gasses blamed for global warming.
Vail Resorts, in Colorado, has signed up to get all of its energy from wind power. Rather than cover the hillsides with turbines, the company has signed on for energy credits via its local power grid. The …

The New Seven Wonders

It turns out that the folks at ABC are not the only ones looking to update the Seven Wonders of the World. A group based in Switzerland has been working since 2001 to come up with a fresh list. The New 7 Wonders Foundation was created by adventurer Bernard Weber with the aim to protect human artifacts across the globe. The project has captured imaginations, with more than 20 million votes already logged as the project enters its final …

Cultures, Turkeys, Memory, And Travel
Tomorrow is Thanksgiving here in the U.S., a big family holiday when far-flung relatives gather to feast, watch football and parades, and give thanks for all they have. But not everyone will be celebrating. Here in New England, Native Americans have gathered at noon every Thanksgiving Day since 1970 on Cole’s Hill in Plymouth, Mass. — the site of the Pilgrims’ landing — to commemorate a National Day of Mourning.
“Thanksgiving day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands, and the relentless assault on …
