Ecotourism Vacations in United States
When people think of holidays in America visions of Hollywood, Disneyland, Las Vegas and New York City spring to mind. These are all great destinations of course but they’re not exactly overflowing in ecotourism opportunities; no, for a greener than green vacation eco travellers need to ignore the usual American holiday brochures and get creative in their thinking. The Untied States has much more to offer than Rodeo Drive and Mickey Mouse.
Ecotourism Ideas in the US
Eco-friendly Santa Barbara – Leave the hustle and bustle of LA driving north to the quaint town of Santa Barbara and discover how they’re turning the area greener than green. From there catch the trolley bus to the nearby vineyards of Napa Valley and savour the local wines before bedding down for the night in a safari-style camp in El Capital Canyon.
Yellowstone National Park – answer the call of the wild by visiting one of the great wildernesses in the US which is home to wild wolves, elk and other wildlife. Hike through the park or camp overnight to truly be at one with nature.
Palm Beach County, Florida – Forget Walt Disney World and all its gaudy glitz and glamour and check out the much nicer family-friendly eco park, Peanut Island. Located in Lake Worth Lagoon, Peanut Island Park covers 86 acres and is accessible only by boat. Pitch a tent on the beach in one of the designated camping spots or treat the family to a native experience by staying in one of the Seminole Indian-style chickee huts. There’s a dedicated Eco Museum there too.

Ecotourism Vacations in Canada
Canada does very little to sell itself as a destination because the images depicting the boundless natural landscapes speak for themselves; they draw travellers from far and wide seeking the great outdoors.
Canada is also a rich cultural melting pot with the French influence undoubtedly dominating and while most of the French-speaking region is based around Quebec, Canada in its entirety is officially a bilingual country. Its diversity both culturally and naturally makes it an excellent destination for any eco traveller.
Go kayaking with orcas off Vancouver Island, trek the Rockies to find feeding grizzly bears or stay in an environmentally-friendly ski chalet on the alpine slopes.

New Florame Organic Range for Eco Travellers
Since the whole travel security scare people like to moan about having to carry their liquids in amounts of 100mls or less. Personally, I love it; it means I get to buy little dinky packs of travel goodies almost every time I travel.
I’ve never been one for carting around family-pack sized cartons of shampoo and conditioner. Many moons ago I used camera film containers for shampoo, conditioner and shower gel (one of the best travel tips I ever learned) which would always last for a few days but never much longer, so when 100ml bottles came out I was like a kid in a candy store. And now, because travel is becoming more environmentally-friendly so too are our toileteries.
Florame, one of France’s leading organic skin care companies have introduced the Organic Travel Kit for eco-savvy travellers. The see-through pack is perfect for security checks and consists of three 50ml bottles of organic skin and hair-care products – Organic Sweet & Mild Shampoo, Rosewood Organic Body Lotion and Citrus Fruits Organic Shower Gel – so you’ll be sure to look and smell as fresh as a daisy no matter where you go.

Women More Inclined to Book Eco Trips Than Men
A recent study by eco-friendly travel company Responsible Travel claims that “women care more about the environment and social impact of their holiday decisions than men”.
The study revealed over two thirds (67%) of people who booked one of Responsible Travel’s ethical holidays online were women. Of the women who booked, roughly one third (37%) booked to travel alone, highlighting the increase in independent and small group travel; a further 45% booked a holiday for two. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that women are necessarily more environmentally-savvy than men when it comes to travel, it may be just because they’re …

Ecotourism Vacations in Alaska
Alaska, the 49th US state, may be cold and relatively barren yet it remains extremely popular with eco tourists keen to view its majestic glaciers and abundant wildlife and with adrenaline seeking travellers; adventure opportunities abound.
Mount McKinley, North America’s largest mountain, in Denali National Park offers exciting routes for hikers and cyclists as do the mountain ranges in the South Central region. Explore the coves and inlets of the Aleutian Islands by kayak, photograph sea otters and puffins on the way, or go inland to watch the brown bears catch …

Earth Hour – Be Part of It
At 8pm on Saturday 29 March 2008 something huge is going to happen. Are you going to be part of it?
Last year in Sydney, Australia, the lights went out across the city for one hour. Restaurants lit candles, offices turned lights off overnight, all non-essential street lighting was switched off; all in an attempt to save some energy. And the world took note.
Two million people took part in Earth Hour in Sydney last year when, according to Energy Australia, energy consumption fell by about 10% which is thought to have saved 25 tonnes of carbon emissions polluting the atmosphere. This year, following Sydney’s lead, 24 cities around the world will take part in Earth Hour with an expected 28 million people being involved. That’s a helluva lot of carbon cuts.

Canvas Chic Luxury Yurt Campsite - Volunteers Needed
UK eco-blog Green Traveller has posted an ad on behalf of the owners of Canvas Chic. They’re looking for people who would like to spend the whole month of April in the South of France setting up a luxury eco-friendly yurt campsite.
Richard Hammond, editor of Green Traveller, says, “The owners [of Canvas Chic] Lodewijk and Ruth are looking for two volunteers who are ‘enthusiastic, hard working and who are willing to learn quickly’. The work includes putting up the yurts, building yurt floors, building and moving furniture, painting the buildings and bar, forest and grounds maintenance.
In return …

Go Green on St Patrick’s Day
Today’s the day when the world and his wife want to be Irish. For something that started out as a Holy Day of Obligation for Irish Catholics (they are obliged to attend mass to honour their patron saint) it’s ironic the day has evolved into a global day of unholy madness and mayhem for anyone who has a speck of Irish blood in them, who once visited Ireland or one day touched someone who knew an Irish person. With much of the original meaning lost or forgotten around the world, Paddy’s Day …
