Orbitz and Expedia Offer Eco-Friendly Hotels
You know ecotourism has hit the big time if global travel booking giants Orbitz and Expedia have started their own eco travel sections providing green accommodation options. So it was with gusto that I trawled through their new pages to see if they’d fallen into the greenwashing trap or whether they’ve done ecotourism proud. The results of my search were both surprising and disappointing.

How to Find a Reputable Eco Travel Company
When it comes to planning a holiday, some people like nothing more than to sit scouring the internet for hours, maybe sometimes days or weeks, in an attempt to find the perfect holiday. Others find it a right pain in the neck. And when you’re desperately trying to be responsible and uphold your eco-friendly beliefs, finding a tour company that can prove their practices are genuinely green can be daunting.
Too many unethical companies are quick to jump on the eco band-wagon and freely brandish their vacations as being eco-friendly when in fact the closest they’ve ever been to green is dreaming about the colour of their money.
So to help you help yourselves when planning an eco trip, Ecotourism Logue has come up with a few tips and tricks to help you find a company that is true blue in the green stakes.

Camping in Lower Glenelg National Park, Australia

I’ve just returned from a camping and canoeing trip in Victoria’s Lower Glenelg National Park and to my surprise I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. The weather was fine, even though it’s going into autumn here in Australia, the borrowed tent was plenty big for two and I had the time to finish a whole book – something that I’ve been missing of late.
Wildlife and River Life
Lower Glenelg National Park (LGNP) sits in the south west corner of Victoria, just shy of the South Australia border. It covers an area of 27,300 hectares and is home to a pretty impressive array of Australian wildlife. Emus prance around like extras from the corps de ballet, their spindly legs carrying great feathered tutu-like bodies, wallabies and kangaroos play chicken with cars and 4×4s, koalas hide high in the tree tops, playing their own version of where’s Wally and the possums sniff around at night seeking spare morsels of food from unsuspecting campers not used to their giant eyes and pleading wiley ways.

The Blue Planet Goes On Tour
Nature documentary sensation, The Blue Planet, brought the underwater world to life for many and attracted millions of viewers world-wide. It was seven years in the making and cost the BBC an absolute fortune, but it was worth it for this remarkable documentary, narrated by legend Sir David Attenborough, succeeded in grabbing the attention of people who had probably never given a second thought to what was going on every day in the oceans of the world.
The countless breath-stopping, jaw-dropping moments throughout the eight episodes produced die-hard fans the world over …

How Green a Traveller Are You?
Everybody loves a quiz; well most people do. They’re perfect for those lovely lazy days that seem to be so infrequent, for when you’re procrastinating about starting work/study/home-reno or for people with obsessive-compulsive-online-quiz-disorder; so here’s a quick eco travel quiz I found on the Guardian’s Travel pages for you. I was scouring for news, honest.
Quiz: How Green a Traveller Are You?
To prove that I do indeed practice what I preach, my next break happens to be a four-hour drive away but not to a country cottage as mentioned in the quiz, no, we’re going camping and canoeing in …

Carbon Neutral Vacations and Tours
With the jury being out on whether offsetting carbon emissions actually works, a carbon neutral break seems only to be likely if you choose to cycle to an eco lodge in your own country, but not so, according to new Costa Rican tour operator on the block, Nature Vacations. They claim to be offering “the world’s first and only carbon neutral vacation” at a luxury ecolodge deep in the heart of the Costa Rican rainforest. But is it?

Eco Travel Logue changes URL to Ecotourism Logue
Only a few months ago EcoTravelLogue shed its skin and revealed this new user-friendly site, which I do hope you’re enjoying, but now that spring is in the air it’s time to complete the transformation and, so, in keeping with ye olde worlde spring cleaning habits, it’s out with the old and in with the new – from now on the website’s URL is www.EcotourismLogue.com.
Thankfully, faithful logue readers shouldn’t have a problem finding us as the old URL automatically transfers people to the new one. I had gotten very used to the old URL myself but sure a …

Earth Day Events 2008
Last month it was Earth Hour, this month it’s Earth Day.
The reaction to Earth Hour was much more than organisers envisaged. In Chicago, 840,000 pounds of carbon dioxide were kept out of the atmosphere, in Toronto energy consumption reduced by 8.7% and in Melbourne, Australia, there was an impressive 10.1% drop in energy use. Next year is set to be much bigger but for those who missed out on Earth Hour, for whatever reason, here’s another chance to go green.
On April 22, 2008 the world will celebrate Earth Day… again (The United Nations celebrates Earth Day on March 21, the Vernal Equinox – beginning of spring). The idea started in 1970 to remind people that they need to consider how their everyday actions affect the environment. Now, almost 40 years later, Earth Day is fighting just as hard to make people recognise their impact on the planet.
Various events are planned around the world but just like Earth Hour you don’t need to attend an event to take part; you can do your own thing to mark the occasion in your own way.

EcoTravelLogue listed by International Ecotourism Society
While it’s great to be recognised by other websites and it’s very important to maintain an air of humility, y’know, not get too pompous about it, how could I possibly not get excited when I discovered an article by EcoTravelLogue highlighted by the granddaddy of all ecotourism organisations, The International Ecotourism Society (TIES). Thanks guys!

TIES, the largest and oldest ecotourism organisation in the world, has been dedicated to promoting ecotourism for almost 20 years. The not-for-profit, non-governmental association sets the tone for ecotourism by providing guidelines and standards, research …
