Ecotourism Green Gear

Eco Jet - Airplanes become more environmentally friendly

Eco friendly travel just got a bit more friendly. EasyJet has announced an Eco Jet that consumes less fuel and puts out less CO2 pollution.

Supposedly in service by 2015, although I’ll believe it when I see it. Everything is always late, including the much-anticipated opening of Ikea in my home town which is now 6 months behind and counting.

Explore the stars, with binoculars

In December, as you wonder about what gifts to buy for folks — or maybe for yourself! — those interested in the world outside might think about tools for exploring the heavens. Many astronomers recommend that beginners start out not with a telescope, but binoculars.

binox.jpgBinoculars are easier to use for the novice because they provide a wide field of view, they’re simple to transport and use, and they’ll be useful even after you graduate to a telescope. They’re great for exploring the surface of the Moon (download a Moon map, or …

More gift ideas for travellers — and the best gift of all

As much as we might try to buck the consumerist tide, this time of year it’s pretty hard to avoid. So from today’s inbox, some more cool and groovy travel-gift ideas…

The folks at Budget Travel suggest items from the Museum of Modern Art online shop, luggage tags, Moleskine city notebooks with maps, packable sketching supplies, and more. Plus they offer a shopping guide to New York City.

I can’t vouch for the thorough green-ness of all those products, but none seem blaringly anti-eco.

But here’s the best gift of all, from the folks at Earth & Sky …

As Activists Protest Against Flying, Researchers Unveil New Technology

planestupid.jpgWith the UN’s latest meeting about climate change getting under way in Nairobi, environmental activists in London protested against EasyJet, an airline that offers short flights around Europe. About a half-dozen protestors handcuffed themselves to doorways at the company’s HQ, while another dozen hung banners from the roof. The building was shut down for about three hours.

“As warnings mount about the irreversible effects of climate change, it is totally out of order for Easyjet to be offering artificially cheap flights to destinations easily reachable by the train alternative, which is over …

Travel Deals For Geezers On The Road

I think there’s a general misconception that the “independent traveler” or “adventure traveler” is a footloose, twentysomething youth, out for a taste of the big wide world before settling down. But I’ve long suspected that a sizeable fraction of those travelers are actually quite a bit older — teachers and professors with free time, or people old enough to be tired of the go-to-the-beach-and-party kind of vacation, or professionals who have been working long enough to have four to six weeks of vacation, or people over 50 who are ready to cut back a bit on work or maybe are …

Your eco-tourism vehicle of the future?

How’s this for the perfect way to sight-see… drifting above the treetops, in a quiet and maneuverable aircraft, that’s easy and fun to fly? Dan Nachbar, an aviator in Amherst, Mass., has built just the ship for eco-touring.

Dan says his aim in building his one-of-a-kind hot-air blimp was to create the perfect vehicle for experiencing “the restorative value that comes from just being in the sky.” He’s thinking of fun flights, often made in the evenings, after work, that don’t go anywhere in particular. “The ‘mission’ here is not transportation. The mission is joy,” he says.

The blimp is …

Choosing a green kayak

kayak-rentals.jpgIf you want to buy yourself a kayak and explore the world’s waterways emissions-free, is there a clear green choice for the kayak itself?

Umbra, of the venerable Grist (an awesomely great online eco-mag), investigates that question. She looks at the whole life cycle of the materials, from fabrication to the day they turn into trash.

Her advice…? Read it at Grist.
