One late night in the newsroom of a newspaper where I used to work, the chitchat turned to the topic of whether to eat meat or not. The talk ranged from health concerns to ethical choices, and pros and cons for all views were deconstructed. But when I raised the environmental issues surrounding the mass production of beef, it kind of stymied the debate. The costs are pretty high — huge amounts of oil and water consumed, soil erosion, deforestation, habitat destruction, etc., etc. — and it’s tough to find an up-side.
