Not your grandmother’s fall foliage

Looking at leaves might seem best left to the tour-bus travel set, but if you haven’t visited New England in the fall, well, you haven’t seen New England. Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, all are at their peak at this shoulder season in between summer beach weather and winter mountain sports.

The Appalachian Mountain Club offers a long list of hikes, many including stays in mountain huts. Volunteers can spend from a day to three weeks building and maintaining trails. Hikers can also help to collect data for scientific studies. Or you can just wander and soak in the scenery. The AMC Fall Into Adventure guide spells out all the options.
