Tour some green buildings

October 7 is the National Solar Tour, with green homes open for visitors in just about every U.S. state. The buildings feature not just solar power but a wide range of energy alternatives and sustainable materials, organic gardens, plus lots of ideas and imagination.

Some students at MIT have taken the concept of green building a step further, envisioning ways to use living materials to create homes that are part of nature itself. Young growing trees would be trained to form walls. Vines woven into the structure would provide insulation and native plants would add an indoor landscape. They haven’t built one yet, but the imaginary pictures are dreamy.
