Blacklisted: The World’s 10 Most Polluted Places
The Blacksmith Institute has named the 10 most polluted places in the world. Many are found in China and Russia, but other sites are in Zambia, Peru, India, and the Dominican Republic. The worst 35 is more diverse, including two sites in the USA.
“The biggest culprits are heavy metals — such as lead, chromium and mercury — and long-lasting chemicals,'” says Richard Fuller, director of the Institute. “A particular concern of all these cases is the accumulating and long-lasting burden building up in the environment and in the bodies of the people most directly affected.” A nuclear meltdown doesn’t help either… Chernobyl is No. 1 on the list.
You might be thinking, these are 10 places to avoid, but actually, I find them kind of interesting. A lot would be learned by the independent traveller who stopped by to take a look.
